Calm in the Storm
The New Book on Settling Strong Emotion

I am so excited to tell you about my newest publication!
Calm in the Storm is a collection of simple emotion regulation strategies that can be self-learned and then utilized in moments of over-whelming emotion (such as anxiety and panic). There are a lot of people who struggle with settling strong emotions, and whose symptoms are causing a great deal of distress in their lives. My hope in creating this book is that the strategies can work for a wide range of individuals, helping them cope by empowering them to settle emotions.

The book is not intended to replace counselling, but rather to provide a collection of efficient strategies that can be learned and then applied in a moment of emotional flooding, to reduce despair and to return to the present.

Advanced Acclaim for Calm in the Storm

“This resource is what every person who lives with anxiety or any effect of trauma needs to read.  I’ve been a trauma therapist for thirty years and I’ve been waiting for something that is easy to read, short, and offers a breadth of grounding tools that the reader can apply to their every day lives.  THIS is that resource, well done Susan!”
- Susan Armstrong, M.Ed. R.C.C.
“This book is a much-needed resource for anyone seeking self-soothing techniques to weather strong emotions. Offering techniques to help navigate dysregulation, this resource is a wonderful opportunity to help us better understand and work with our nervous systems.  While we can’t control life, we can manage our response to the ride!”

- Cristin Brew, LMFT
“This book offers easy-to-use strategies for calming emotion during the preparation for EMDR and deeper levels of therapy. It is a vital tool for clients to successfully engage in EMDR and trauma therapy the first time – enhancing the ability to engage in re-processing within the window of tolerance. It is a must read for both clinicians and clients. When used collaboratively with a therapist, the strategies offered in this book can enhance collaboration around skill building and resource development.”

- Irene DeLeenheer, RCSW, MSW, BSW. EMDRIA certified Therapist and Consultant with Safe Zone Counselling
“I’m excited about the release of Susan’s book on emotional self-regulation. As a practicing therapist who aims to put patients in touch with their core emotions, I frequently encounter individuals who resist experiencing feelings for fear of being overtaken by them. “What am I supposed to do with all this anger/sadness/fear?!” This book will be a resource for supporting clients in managing difficult emotional states towards safety and healing.”

"Thank you, Susan, for this comprehensive companion guide for anyone experiencing emotional distress and anxiety. Your book is beautifully accessible -- readers will come away with knowledge about the physiology of emotion, the easy-to-use tools which can be helpful in regulating emotion, and an awareness of when professional help might also be indicated. I also appreciate the way your book weaves in pieces of wisdom from a number of experts in the fields of mindfulness and self-compassion. I am frequently referring your book to current clients, and can only imagine how useful it would have been during my years working in an oncology setting! Thank you again..."

"I really appreciate this book’s explanation of how the brain and body respond to stress. It is written in a way that allows the reader to really zone into and reflect on their own system, and identify what may be triggering certain symptoms. The book then smoothly transitions into strategies to bring the system back into balance. There are numerous fantastic strategies in this book that can be implemented and practised to reduce or prevent anxiety. I found the book to be very informative in describing why certain strategies are effective, and what one might expect when practising them. I think anyone could benefit from a book like this, and would definitely recommend to those struggling with trauma, stress or anxiety."
- Stacie B. (Vernon BC)
